Coaching Staff
Head Volleyball Coach
Ryan Mitchell
In 2008, Coach Mitchell led the Varsity team to its first State Championship and a 40-5 record. He was
named Dallas Morning News Coach of the Year and District 13-AAA Coach of the Year in 2008. Previously
in 2007, Mitchell compiled a 32-8 varsity season and led the Leopards in their first varsity season to
a Regional Tournament Appearance and the District 9-AAA title. Coach Mitchell came to Lovejoy having coached
at Hebron High School for 5 years as an assistant and one year at Irving Nimitz as Head Volleyball Coach.
Coach Mitchell attended Dallas Baptist University where he played on the men's volleyball team as a
setter. He is actively involved in club volleyball having coached for Victory Volleyball Club the past
8 years and taken 7 teams to the Junior Olympic Championships. He is currently the Co-Director of Victory
VBC and competed this past year in 15 Open with his team in Miami. Coach Mitchell is married to Lana and
they have two children Reid (4 years) and Eli (2 years). In his spare time, he enjoys watching movies,
playing golf, and hanging with the family.
Assistant Coach
Bryan Stanfield
Coach Stanfield is the newest addition to the Leopard volleyball staff. He will be coaching the JV Red
team and serving as one of the Varsity assistants. This will mark his fifth year in teaching. Coach Stanfield
taught World Geography at Sam Houston HS in Arlington TX for four years. Last year he coached the Lady
Texans JV volleyball and JV softball teams. For the past five years, Stanfield has coached club volleyball
at various levels for Texas Advantage Volleyball. This past year he served as assistant to TAV's top team
for the 13's and 15's age groups. His 13 Asics team competed at the Junior Olympics Championship in
Miami, where they won TAV's first National Championship at the Open level. Coach Stanfield's family has
been involved in volleyball for over 35 yrs. His father is Arthur Stanfield who coached Red Oak to 3 State
Titles in 4A and was recently hired as the new coach at Southlake Carroll High School. Coach Stanfield SR.
actually coached Coach Mitchell's wife in club. His mother is Kathy Stanfield, who was an All-American
in college at UTA, and coached for several years before going into Administration in Arlington. In his
spare time, he enjoys movies, golf and straightening his hair with a red CHI.
Assistant Coach
Dena Goddard
This is Coach Goddard's second year in the Lovejoy volleyball program. She has spent time as a
varsity coach in the private school sector and assisted with last year's Varsity State Champion
program. Dena has a great family with her husband, Mike, and her twelve-year old son, Brock. She
loves to spend time with family as well as doing adventure racing triathlons with her husband. Dena is
a reading teacher for Lovejoy Elementary schools. She has attended the following: Baptist Bible College,
Springfield, Mo. (Missions) - three time All-Conference Volleyball; Liberty University, Lynchburg,
VA (B.A. - Education).
Assistant Coach
Jeff Kear
Coach Kear graduated from North Mesquite High School and the University of North Texas. He began teaching
and coaching at Granbury High School where he was an assistant coach for the State Champion boys soccer
team in 1999. At Wylie High School, Coach Kear led the girls' soccer team to the regional finals in 2006.
Coach Kear founded the girls soccer program at Lovejoy High School and is in his third year coaching
the Freshman Volleyball team. He teaches US Government and AP US Government.
Head Coach - Sloan Creek
Kristin Moss
Coach Moss opened the new Lovejoy High School in 2006 and is very excited about starting her
fourth year at Lovejoy. Coach Moss is also the head tennis coach for both high school and
middle school. She graduated from Texas Tech University and is a very proud Red Raider. This
is her 7th year to coach as well as teach history. She came to Lovejoy from Rockwall where
she coached both volleyball and tennis and taught history for four years.
Head Coach - Sloan Creek
Roxann Ward
Coach Ward joined the Lovejoy family in 2007. This begins Coach Ward's 30th
year of teaching English and 18th year of coaching. She attended Abilene Christian University and
played volleyball for the Lady Wildcats for 3 years then married and accompanied her husband Mark to
Ft. Hood, Texas. While in the hill country, she completed her degree at Mary-Hardin Baylor University
in Belton. Excited about teaching and coaching, Coach Ward coached JV basketball and track for
Clyde and then took several years away from coaching to be with her two beautiful children,
Casey and Zach.
In 1993, Coach Ward re-entered coaching at Coppell West Middle School when her husband was transferred
to the Dallas area and she coached 7th and 8th grade basketball and 7th grade volleyball. She and her
husband moved to McKinney, where she coached and taught middle school at Clark Middle School in Princeton
and Dowell Middle School in McKinney.
Coach Ward truly enjoys working with young people, especially the middle school levels. Both her children
are now married and she has one precious granddaughter. In her spare time, she enjoys playing with Taylor,
walking, and watching movies.
Head Athletic Trainer
Quentin Oliphant
Quentin Oliphant is currently Head Athletic Trainer and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for the
Lovejoy secondary program. Coach "Q", as he is affectionately called by his athletes, graduated from
Plano East Sr. High in 1987. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education with an
emphasis in Sport Science from Upper Iowa Univ. He then came back to Texas and worked one year at
Signature Athletic Club as a personal trainer. Coach Q was awarded a Master of Sport Science degree
in Sports Medicine from the U.S. Sports Academy. He completed his coursework for a M.S. in Rehabilitation
Science from the California Univ. at Pennsylvania. Coach Q is NASM certified in the areas of performance
enhancement and corrective exercise. He is currently working on his Dr. of Health Education at A.T. Still
Univ. of Health Sciences in Mesa, Arizona. He has worked at McKinney North H.S., Mount Pleasant H.S., Van
Alstyne H.S., and the Sports Medicine Section of Los Colinas Hospital.
Athletic Trainer
Susan Smiley
Susan Smiley is a Graduate of Ennis High School and Tarleton State University. At Tarleton she received a
Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Exercise and Sports Science. She worked for 13 years as the
athletic trainer at Plano East Senior High School and has been at Lovejoy High school for 2 years. Coach
Smiley is a practicing Athletic Trainer who is licensed by the State of Texas.
Team Manager
Meghan Hancock
Meghan Hancock joined the team as a Manager/Volunteer Athletic Trainer during the 2008-2009 season. Meghan is
currently a Junior at Lovejoy High School. She wishes to pursue a career in Sports Medicine following
graduation.
